A person’s workplace is usually his or her home away from home. Employers, not just employees, should take responsibility of the health situation in the workplace because an ordinary employee spends a third of everyday in it. With this article, workplace health issues will be more thoroughly explored.
No one gets to live life without the need to work even for just one time in their life. And what’s better than having a place to work in that doesn’t feel risky or life threatening at all. A few of the more important workplace health issues that need to be addressed by employers are of course stress and overall mental health, smoking, drugs, alcohol, work life balance and last but not the least diet and nutrition.
Although often neglected, the food we eat directly affects other parts of our life from the way we feel to the way we react. It should be common practice for companies to teach their employees how eating right leads to both short term and long term benefits. Workplace health starts with the employee and eating right simply reduces a lot of headaches and problems along the way.
No matter how good or bad the economy is, there will always be stress inside a company. This is why good workplace health programs like hobbies and group activities that are not work related can do a lot of good in decreasing stress. Any program that aims to balance work and non work related parts of life.
The majority of the population knows smoking is bad, and bad for everyone, not just for smokers. By implementing and following a zero tolerance to smoking in any part of the company’s properties, companies are sending a strong message that they are serious when it concerns workplace health. By eliminating smoking now, you eliminate a lot of lung and oral health problems that later on would be shouldered by the health benefits of the company.
While studies have proven the health benefits of drinking alcohol, this does not give people the license to drink out of control. Employee’s who are found to be in possession of either alcohol or drugs in the workplace obviously have no regards for workplace health and should be punished severely. Since an employee can be seriously affected by illegal drugs, it is safer to dismiss employees who are found taking drugs.
Sexual health is as importance as any other workplace health related issue and companies should educate and promote it to their employees. Good sexual health simply means better physical health as having sex once or twice a week has been linked to a better immune system according to studies. All employees should know the dangers of having unprotected sex and the types of sexually transmitted diseases that can infect a person.
Even though it is hard to prove otherwise, stress is believed to originate from a person’s workplace. Workplaces don’t have to be colorful and expensive to be considered safe and promoting good health, as simple no frills working environments can do the same job. It’s a good thing that companies are now investing heavily on creating working environments that put a big emphasis on workplace health.
In conclusion, this article is a good starting place for anyone to delve deeper into each health issue presented and not presented here. While workers and individuals are ultimately responsible for their own health, in the workplace the company is held liable for any accident or health related occurrence. The future looks bright for health care if and only if simple workplace health measures such as discussed above can be implemented effectively.
